Coculturing rice with aquatic animals promotes ecological intensification of paddy ecosystem: a review

چکیده

Abstract Species coculture can increase agro-biodiversity and therefore constitutes an ecological intensification measure for agriculture. Rice-aquatic animal coculture, one type of species has been practiced researched widely. Here, we review recent studies present results a quantitative analysis literature on rice–aquatic systems. We address three questions: (i) rice yield soil fertility be maintained or increased with less chemical input through rice-aquatic coculture? (ii) how do aquatic animals benefit the paddy ecosystem? (iii) implemented intensification? Meta-analysis based published papers showed that cocultures yield, organic carbon, total nitrogen decreased insect pests weeds compared to monocultures. Studies also reduced pesticide fertilizer application Rice plants provide beneficial environment animals, leading high activities in field. Aquatic turn, help remove act as engineers affect conditions, which favor growth plants. promote nutrient cycling complementary use nutrients between enhances nutrient-use efficiency coculture. To generate outcomes, develop compatible partnerships culturing strategies systems are key points. Investigating traits varieties could best match create productive sustainable future focuses.

Ecological Sustainability of the Paddy Soil-rice System in Asia

The paddy soil-rice system has efficient nutrient replenishing mechanisms. Basic cations and silica are supplied by irrigation water, while biological fixation works as an inexhaustible source of N in the system, and phosphorus availability is enhanced under anaerobic conditions. This, along with almost perfect resistance to soil erosion, gives the paddy rice system high productivity as well as...

Ecological intensification: harnessing ecosystem services for food security.

Rising demands for agricultural products will increase pressure to further intensify crop production, while negative environmental impacts have to be minimized. Ecological intensification entails the environmentally friendly replacement of anthropogenic inputs and/or enhancement of crop productivity, by including regulating and supporting ecosystem services management in agricultural practices....

Predicting nutrient excretion of aquatic animals with metabolic ecology and ecological stoichiometry: a global synthesis.

The metabolic theory of ecology (MTE) and ecological stoichiometry (ES) are both prominent frameworks for understanding energy and nutrient budgets of organisms. We tested their separate and joint power to predict nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P) excretion rates of ectothermic aquatic invertebrate and vertebrate animals (10,534 observations worldwide). MTE variables (body size, temperature) perf...

A materially-closed aquatic-ecosystem: a useful tool for determining changes of ecological processes in space.

A materially-closed aquatic ecosystem (microcosm) was developed. The microcosm contained two families of green algae and blue-green alga as primary producers, protozoa, two species of rotifers and oligochaetes as consumers, and bacteria as decomposers. The microcosm could be readily replicated. It was confirmed the population densities of each organism were almost constant for 365 days without ...

Agricultural intensification and ecosystem properties.

Expansion and intensification of cultivation are among the predominant global changes of this century. Intensification of agriculture by use of high-yielding crop varieties, fertilization, irrigation, and pesticides has contributed substantially to the tremendous increases in food production over the past 50 years. Land conversion and intensification, however, also alter the biotic interactions a...
